I only wish I wasn't the one who always had to test you with those "bad days."
[With a sigh, he leans against, her nuzzling into her neck as he closes his eyes and breathes in her scent and lets her warmth envelop him more than the water.]
But I do mean it... If I hadn't met you and had your love... I'm not sure how much more difficult it would have been.
[She doesn't want to say what she thinks when he says that, if only because this is a moment she doesn't want to ruin or dampen with such a stupid thought... A thought that she doesn't want to breathe life into more than she already has. That maybe it was because of that love that all of this has happened... but she knows that couldn't be further from the truth.
And everything he says chases it away as quickly as it had come anyway, and her arms wrap around him to keep him close, and she nestles her face into his hair.]
I know for sure it wouldn't be as easy for me... All the times when you've picked me up and reminded me what I've got. And all the times when you've set me back down and told me to stop for a while.
[His care and his love for her saved her more times than she cares to admit.]
And when I came back from home, you were the only thing that felt real to me. You grounded me again. Helped me get back on my feet when I felt so... defeated.
[Hearing her words does reassure him a bit, his arms going around her to hug her tightly.]
Just like you are my support...I will always be yours.
[And while she may not think it fair, he's actually glad she's never turned into a noctaere. Glad that while she's had her share of suffering, it's never gotten as bad as this. Of course...he worries if being around him won't actually feed into hers and be a source, which is another reason why he resents how he once again turned.]
But you really are the strongest woman I know...and everyday I feel grateful and lucky to have you.
[She can't help it. Everything else be damned, she is going to kiss her husband for that, and with a soft splash, her lips will suddenly be on his. And while it is slow and sweet, there is a hidden, fiery passion hidden beneath the deliberate move of her lips, a promise of things to come once they have both recovered, because gods know they both need it. For now, she is content to show him how grateful she is through this when words don't feel like enough.]
And you're the strongest man I know.
[To have gone through all of that and still come out on the other side wanting to do what's right... She can't think of anyone more resilient.]
Guess that's what makes us such a good team, yeah?
[She leans back from him then, looking him right in his eyes.]
No matter what happens, I'm always going to love you. Just always remember that, okay?
[He could turn a thousand times—god forbid—and she would still be there to save him and to pick him back up and love him until her very last breath.
And her lips part again, as if she wants to say something more, but she hesitates...]
[The kiss surprises him—but he accepts it wholeheartedly and returns it in kind. There's only a slight wince from the soreness his body feels when he leans more into her, but he just ignores it.]
I will.
[Once upon a time he would have questioned and have those uncertainties, but she has proven time and time again that she would persevere. He of course won't take it for granted, but he knows he can rely on her love and her.
But he notices her hesitation, and after waiting a moment to see if she would speak for herself, he slowly opens his mouth.]
[He doesn't even need to say a thing. His eyes and his kiss say it all but hearing him say it makes her heart flutter and fill so much more with love and appreciation for him, all of it spilling out into the kiss that she returns in equal kind.]
Renew them, make new ones... A little bit of both.
[She can't stop smiling against his lips.]
A lot's happened since then. Feels like it's been longer than it has, but there's so much more that I wanna say to you.
[A small laugh.]
And I think Lyria would love to be there for this one.
When he thinks about how many of their friends have left this world, it's a little sobering, especially it had been such a surprisingly big celebration after. But he just nods, anyway.]
Mm... I'd like that.
[Because this would be better for a very close, private thing for the two of them and what he would prefer.]
[She just wants to tell him all over again how much she loves him, but... an idea springs to mind.]
You think Joshua would wanna do it?
[It probably isn't needed, but... he has helped them in so many ways already that it would make the most sense. If anyone here could do it, it would be a prince, for one, but more than that, she owes quite a bit to him.]
He hardly knows us and he's always willing to help.
[Her smile spreads, and it's both grateful and tinged with a bit of sadness. She doesn't like finding friends through adversity, but it just happens sometimes. Not that she isn't appreciative of it, but she wishes that it could have been under better circumstances.]
When the time comes, we can ask, though I doubt it'll be a problem.
[A pause, and she leans her head against his again.]
[And as if on cue, his stomach, which has been empty for the several days he was out, lets out a large growl that can be heard even from underwater, and he just looks at her blankly before snorting and laughing a bit.]
[She leans all the way back from him with round, surprised eyes at the sound of his stomach before she, too, breaks out into giggles.]
So hasty. Here I was just trying to enjoy a moment with my husband.
[Though she can feel a grumble of her own coming on after barely having eaten herself in the last three days besides what the attendants and medics have told her to eat. So she gives him one last kiss and climbs out of the water before he can hear it, running her fingers over his ears and wrapping herself up in a towel so that she can head inside. Meanwhile, she insists that he continues to relax in the water—the pool's healing properties will do wonders for him—while she gets dressed and heads down to the front desk.
They'll leave the food at the door, a combination of fruits and vegetables, sandwiches, juices, and even a bottle of wine, for her to fetch, and it's at the edge of the pool where they enjoy it, her feet dangling in the water as she munches on and feeds him fruits while they talk about all sorts of things. Telling him what Tifa had been up to while he was asleep, which wasn't much, about how they might want to renew their vows, about what sorts of gifts they could bring back down for Lyria and the dogs...
And when all of that is through, inside they go where Tifa is content to simply be with him. To be in his company as they lie in bed together, chatting their way into a nap, with her dozing off first. It's a sleep that she has needed and has struggled to get, and she desperately needed. A dreamless, restful sleep at her husband's side, now that he is safe and sound and awake again.
Not so dreamless that she doesn't recognize the sweet scent of their flowers, or the soft lull of his breathing, or the warmth of his body as it wraps around hers. Not so dreamless that she doesn't remind herself that this... this right here is what she will continue to love and fight for, no matter where they are, no matter the nightmares, no matter how hard it may be.
This—he is her life now. Every part of him, nightmares and all. And she wouldn't have it any other way.]

[She smiles at him—the kind that reaches up into her eyes and crinkles them and her nose.]
But I said that I would be there for you, in every way. Whether you're having a good or bad day. I don't plan on breaking that promise any time soon.

So thank you.

What is it?
no subject
So she just comes out and says it anyway.]
When all of this is done, and we can stay here...
[When they've figured out the mystery of the tethers...]
... What if we renewed our vows?
no subject
Of course.
[—his voice quiet and soft against her lips.]
We can renew them as many times as you want...even make new ones if you wish.
no subject
Renew them, make new ones... A little bit of both.

She would. I still remember how shocked and disappointed she was in just missing it.

[All the more reason for them to do it again, this time with their whole family here.]
We could do something small... just us and her and the dogs...

Would be nice, compared to the actual wedding. ... Do we still need an officiant?
[She doesn't actually know how renewing ones vows works, though.]
no subject
I'm actually not sure. If it's just vow renewals... Maybe not? Who would we even ask...
[Since Trahearne officiated their wedding and is...no longer around.]

[It's an unexpected name, but... He can't help but smile a little.]
I think so. It's not a bad choice, especially after everything we've done for each other.
[In some ways it's interesting to think how quickly their friendship had grown—unexpectedly, really.]

[A pause, and she leans her head against his again.]
... Something to look forward to for all of us.
no subject
[A quiet hum as he closes his eyes and leans against her, his hand finding hers to take it and brush his thumb against her palm.]
I think that's something we all could use right now...
no subject
[Her own fingers curl around his, her other hand coming to rest over it.]
... Hey. Do you want me to grab us some food? You can stay in the water a little longer while I have some sent up for us.
no subject
[And as if on cue, his stomach, which has been empty for the several days he was out, lets out a large growl that can be heard even from underwater, and he just looks at her blankly before snorting and laughing a bit.]
Better make it quick.
❤️💙 fin.
