Not at all, and taking him with you will help grow a bond. But his favorite toy is any kind of tug toy, especially the ropes. You could try playing with him that way to get him to ease up. The underside of his belly is also a weak point. If you can manage to tickle him, he'll roll onto his back and forget about everything.
